"Turn It On Over again"
| ||||
"Turn It On Once again" is a single past the English rock band Genesis, from their 1980 album Duke. Information technology reached number viii in the United kingdom Singles Chart,[2] becoming the band'south second top 10 striking. The lyrics, past Mike Rutherford,[iii] concern a man who does zippo more watch television set. He becomes obsessed with the people he watches on it, believing them to be his friends.
The song is featured on the Wink FM station playlist in the game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories.
Background [edit]
"Plough It On Once more" was built from leftovers from projects past each member: The second set up of verses was conceived by Tony Banks for A Curious Feeling: "Nosotros kind of put [Rutherford's riff] – the bit he didn't use on Smallcreep's Solar day, curiously plenty – with the bit I didn't utilise on A Curious Feeling, and put these ii together. We fabricated it much more than rocky; both bits became much more rocky. My flake was a bit more ballsy, and Mike'due south bit was a chip slower and a scrap more than heavy metal. And then Phil gave it a much more straightforward drum role; perhaps neither of u.s.a. would accept thought that we would want that on that bit [...] Nosotros put on one or 2 other bits, also, that ended upwardly from in that location".[4]
The song is characterised past a rhythmic structure uncharacteristically complex for pop music but common in the band's progressive rock back catalogue. The poetry/chorus sections alternate fourth dimension signatures, vi
iv to 7
four ( xiii
4 ), while the intro and bridge sections are in 4
four and 5
4 ( 9
4 ). The song – written mostly past Rutherford, with aid from Phil Collins – was originally much slower. Rutherford explains on the Songbook DVD: "I had this riff [plays lead riff on guitar], but at the fourth dimension I was playing it like this: [plays slower]. And Phil said, 'Why don't you lot try it in a faster speed?' and and then he said to me, 'Practise yous realize information technology is in 13
8 ?' and I said, 'What practise you hateful, it's in 13? It'due south in four
iv , isn't it?' 'No, information technology's thirteen.'"
Collins confirms: "You can't dance to it. You see people trying to trip the light fantastic to it every now and again. They go on the off beat out but they don't know why".[5] Tony Banks adds: "You can't dance or handclapping along to it because of that fourth dimension signature. When nosotros play it live, you can ever meet the audition getting caught out."[6]
"Turn Information technology On Once again" has been a favourite at Genesis'south shows. Consequently, the group'southward 1999 compilation Turn Information technology On Again: The Hits and its 2007 expanded reissue, subtitled The Tour Edition, were named subsequently it, as was the band's 2007 Turn Information technology On Again: The Bout reunion tour. In the 1980s, the band would attach a medley of 1960s popular songs (referred to by the band as the "Blues Brothers" medley, as the showtime song was "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love"). The song would be returned to its album course for the Nosotros Tin't Trip the light fantastic tour and the band would after regard the medley as a poor decision.[ commendation needed ] Peter Gabriel played drums when he reunited with his onetime bandmates at 1982's Six of the Best show and found himself baffled by its time signatures. "It was typical Peter: 'Oh, I can play this'," observed Tony Banks. "But one time he started playing, he kept looking around going, Oh fuck! 'Plow It On Once more' does funny things – it's truly a Genesis song."[6]
Originally written and recorded in the key of B Major, it was transposed downwardly to A for the 2007 tour and further down to G for the 2021 tour to recoup for the lowering of Collins' voice.
The Duke Suite [edit]
"Turn it on Again" was originally a section of a long suite written past the band that was dissever into individual songs before information technology was released. At the time, was but an interlude between the preceding and next sections of the suite.
Chart functioning [edit]
"Turn It on Again" was a moderate hit in North America, but failed to reach the Tiptop forty except in regional markets such as Chicago (#31 on WLS-AM).[7] However, it was a bigger hit in Europe, particularly in the United kingdom where it reached #8.[8]
