Who Played Drums on Black Sabbath Born Again?

  1. Personally, I've accustomed the stories that Ward played on the anthology only because it'southward not quite as exuberant as the drumming on Mob Rules. It's much more "busy" on Mob than information technology is on Heaven.

The lack of the swing may really but be downwards to Ward existence pickled during the sessions. You could lose a lot of personality in your craft by being bombed out while working...

Perchance I'1000 doing too much of a surface read though. Anyone else?

  2. My gut says it's Neb. Being loaded tin can account for the change. Also, and perhaps more telling, with all the bad blood and pissing about over the years, nigh Pecker's health and inability to withstand the rigors of touring etc, I think if he was too incapacitated to play on H&H, someone would accept spilled the beans already.
  3. Ward has also said that he just didn't similar being in the band after Ozzy left and didn't actually care for the material. A combination of drunkard + phoning it in could definitely affect someone's playing. Also, Vinnie Appice has perfect time, and at the beginning of the song "Heaven and Hell," when the guitar drops out and it's but bass and drums, there's a wobbly tempo moment that sounds very much like boozer + "I refuse to practice another have."
  4. I would have to say yes. If yous listen to the bootlegs of the very early function of the tour, where Bill is playing with the band, information technology'due south not hard to believe that what he'southward playing live fits with what was recorded. Information technology sounds like he's simply doing his parts, rather than copying what someone else did in the studio.

When it comes to these types of stories of other musicians roofing for master members, you can usually tell the difference. Only using Buss Dynasty as an example, that is obviously non Peter Criss and rather Anton Fig. So when I listen to H&H at that place is nothing recorded at that place that makes me think Bill couldn't take done it, or strays too much from his manner of playing.

  5. How nearly that he'due south tailoring his playing to fit the song? (Serving the song.)

I hateful, what exercise y'all wish he would exercise differently? I can't call up of a moment where what he plays doesn't fit the song. This track burns!

  6. Tony and Geezer somewhat changed their arroyo to playing for this cloth. Is it so unbelievable that Bill wouldn't have as well?
  7. Is there a body of speculation/conspiracy theory that he didn't?

    OZZY sounds different Likewise.
  9. Did Bill Ward drum on "Sky And Hell"?

No, Keith Moon. Fix the thread title!

  10. I idea it was the Easybeats!
  11. Of course. I beloved his drumming on Born Again, likewise.
  12. I've never heard that it was other than Bill, and Bill has often commented on his thwarting in the management of the band at the time (he particularly hated "Lady Evil). And he toured with them also for a brusk time.

The real controversy (if there is one) is whether or non Geezer plays the bass on H&H. Geezer actually dropped out of the band when the album was being written and Craig Gruber was brought in, and Gruber claims he played bass on the album and was not credited. The residuum of the band says that Geezer returned at the end and re-cut all the bass parts that Gruber did. I think it's Geezer on the album personally.

    Doggiedogma and Opeth similar this.
  13. Yeah, sorry, I was too lame to mention Blackness Sabbath... But this way, I learned about that really absurd Easybeats song!:D

Yes! I saw The Who open with this in 1970. I was 15 years quondam and 10 anxiety from the stage. One of the groovy nights of my life.
  15. In ane of the recent DVDs from Dio Sabbath and Heaven and Hell (might be the bonus DVD from the dio years or the devil you know) Geezer states he rerecorded the bass parts while "nicking the best parts" while laughing. Then if he'due south telling the truth it sounds similar he came in and probably didn't stray too much while calculation his one manner and maybe a few bits to what was already laid down.

I love Wards drums on H and H information technology'south slightly less colt but with a lot of pounding shorter type runs.

I appreciate appice but his style is as well consistent and samey on everything he's done. That being said Dehumanizer is a great drum anthology imo

  16. It'due south definitely Geezer. This was clarified years ago. The idea that anyone else played those bass parts was silly because he rejoined that band. As I recollect Gruber was later in agreement that his stuff wasn't used, but I call up he claimed he did write the main riff in "Die Young."

Information technology's also definitely Bill. Nobody could take played that stuff like him. He may have had mixed emotions most it all and been dealing with alcoholism, only there is still a certain swing on H&H like only he can bring information technology. With all respect to Vinnie Appice who I take always liked, NO Fashion IN ALL OF DRUMMER DREAMLAND could he have played that stuff that fashion. Bill'due south brilliance is all over H&H, it's just a different style of music. On the bout, he was incredible. Some feel he was playing out of his listen on that bout and information technology makes it all the more sad that he couldn't continue.

  17. I'm pretty certain information technology's Bernard Purdie... ;)
  18. Oh, I agree information technology is who the sleeve says it is, I was just reporting that the actual controversy - to the extent that there ever was one - was over Geezer and not Pecker.
  19. aye was at that place a doubtfulness or fan conspiracy about this?
  20. I'grand a bit embarrassed to acknowledge that I never gave Bill'due south drumming much thought growing up, only I've come to recognize what a pivotal figure he is in the world of hard rock/metallic. His swing is what sets him apart from so many other drummers in the genre. Ian Paice also has that swing that is and then rare in hard rock.
  21. I was going to mention the Gruber story as well. From what I recollect reading, he did lay downwardly lots of bass, but Geezer came dorsum in a rerecorded bass parts. I can't retrieve the interview correct now, but information technology specifically said bass parts and not all the bass parts. To me, that means Craig is in fact on the anthology.
And it wasn't just Bill that was toast. Tony was beyond Snowblind, and I'm sure Ronnie wasn't exactly Mr Sober either, equally he was known to enjoy his pints. Geezer wasn't actually present for much of the work equally he was busy chasing his now wife in St Louis, IIRC... I bet Martin Birch would know the real answer, simply I doubt he'd say much.
